What Is the Tater Torpedo Bat? The Story Behind One of Baseball’s Most Unique Bats

When it comes to innovation in wood bat design, the Tater Torpedo Bat stands in a league of its own. Crafted with precision and backed by over a decade of feedback from ballplayers across every level of the game, this bat is built for one thing: better results through smarter engineering.

Since its launch in 2015, the Torpedo has been swinging loud—from slow pitch softball diamonds to college dugouts and even the pro level. But what exactly makes it different? Let’s break it down.

A Barrel Built Around the Sweet Spot

Most bats follow a traditional taper from handle to barrel. The Torpedo? Not quite. The magic behind this model lies in its mass distribution.

Instead of spreading the barrel weight across the full length of the bat, the Torpedo concentrates its mass around the “grouping” — the area where hitters most consistently make contact. This isn’t a guess — it’s based on years of swing data and feedback from real players.

By focusing the weight in this zone:

  • The barrel diameter increases slightly, creating a larger surface area for contact.
  • The swing remains balanced, giving hitters quick hands and barrel control through the zone.

This short explainer gives you a look at the unique barrel shape and how we’ve re-imagined wood bat construction to better match how hitters actually make contact.

Game-Ready Performance, Designed with Purpose

To maintain the high-density wood feel and durability, we recommend swinging the Torpedo in a Drop 2. This drop weight keeps more mass in the barrel, helping you stay through the ball and deliver consistent, powerful contact — all while reducing break risk.

What makes it feel so good in your hands? It starts with the slightly flared, bell-style knob, designed for comfort and control. It gives you a secure, ergonomic grip that minimizes hand strain and helps you whip the barrel through the zone with ease.

Pair that with a thin handle, medium barrel, and balanced swing weight, and you get a bat that feels smooth, fast, and confident through every part of your swing.

This is a review by Jake Olliger, Co-Founder of Lightning Lab, where he hit the ball 103.8 mph and 107+ mph respectively. He posted and captioned this video on instagram as well and said:

"
Overall I really like the torpedo - I definitely felt like it had much more juice on balls closer to the logo. The bat is also really dense and stiff.

With the weight being closer to your hands it also feels like you can whip that bat through the zone much faster.

As someone who hits a lot of balls closer to the logo it felt like an advantage to have more barrel on that part of the bat."
